Year 2 World War I and II workshop

Year 2 had a fantastic day with the Durham Light Infantry using their collection of artefacts and taking part in a range of learning experiences. They started off completing a timeline activity where they ordered events in history to see where both World Wars came in relation to other events in history. The boys are starting to understand that dates are an important part of history.

The boys then took part in a workshop entitled Real Stories, Real Lives where they were soldiers in military drill on the yard. They also used contemporary sources, objects and other sources to work out the journey of DLI soldiers through the First World War. The boys handled genuine artefacts that helped illustrate what life was like in the trenches. They discussed, explored and tried to empathise with the personal feelings and effects of war on families. They then went on to recreate a First World War family portrait in costume!

In the afternoon, the boys took part in a whole group exploration of propaganda. They used contemporary sources, objects and other sources to analyse and discuss the audience and purpose of propaganda.

The boys had a very informative day which enriched their learning on this topic.
