Arthur, Nursery

"Our son had just turned three when he started in the Early Years Nursery and within a short time we knew we had made the right choice for him to be educated at NSB. He is always happy on the journey to school, with growing confidence and signs of independence affirming he is in the right place.

We are very impressed by the friendly confident attitude of all the boys we meet daily at the Infant School. Their caring, thoughtful behaviour towards all the boys in Nursery is a reflection of the dedicated and enthusiastic staff you see as role models within the school.

We believe NSB offers a unique opportunity for our son; first class continued education from 3 to 18 years, small class sizes, excellent teaching and what appealed most to us as parents; the individual pastoral care.

As all parents our son’s happiness is at the forefront of our minds.  We would recommend a visit to the school so that you can explore the opportunities available to watch your son grow in confidence, encouraged to make friends and enjoy learning in an outstanding environment. " - Arthur’s parents

“Boys in our Nursery benefit from many opportunities to develop their speaking and listening skills and individual thoughts and opinions are valued. Classroom activities allow boys to explore the topic on offer in a fun way whilst developing fine motor control skills, something that is extremely developmentally important for boys. This provides a firm foundation for future learning and give boys a flying start to their educational journey. Although only with us since September, by being immersed in this nurturing and play based environment, Arthur has grown in confidence and independence." – Mrs Woosnam, Head of Infants

Leo, Year 1

"Leo is my youngest son, having previously sent his older brother, James to NSB, where he remains.

The biggest credit I can give is that both of my boys absolutely love going to school. The small class size, wonderful pastoral care and good level of academic performance help to create an atmosphere for young boys to thrive. The provisions for sport, music and any individual needs ensure that Newcastle School for Boys is an excellent choice for your son's very important education." - Leo's mother

"Leo joined us at NSB in the Nursery and it has been a pleasure to see him develop since. Within our Nursery, boys are given a good grounding in reading, letter formation and numbers through a range of topics and play based learning that captures the imagination of boys. Along with a continued individual and whole class teaching you can see how these foundations have allowed him to make excellent progress and it is great to see his growth in confidence as a result. Leo is one of our boys who makes the most of everything on offer including co-curricular activities after school." - Mrs Woosnam, Head of Infants

Thomas, Year 1

"Thomas joined the Nursery a few weeks before his third birthday.  He therefore spent four and half academic terms in the Nursery and is now moving up through the School.

NSB has a lovely family feel and all the boys and teachers know one another across the year groups.  When we first looked around the whole school we were struck by the obvious camaraderie the boys had with one another.  We have witnessed this outside of school with older boys making a point of coming over and saying hello to Thomas.

The small class sizes have allowed all the staff to really get to know Thomas and understand how to get the best out of him.  He is happy and enjoys school.

We chose NSB because encouraging a child's personality and confidence is equally important as high academic achievement.  This is best achieved in a smaller school where Thomas will feel part of a team." - Thomas' father

"Thomas benefitted from the flying start he had at NSB Nursery. His interest in learning was harnessed through play based activities. Being able to read simple sentences from an early age has helped him access the other curriculum areas and he has been thoroughly immersed in and made excellent progress in the boy centred curriculum on offer." - Mrs Woosnam, Head of Infants

Year 2 boy

“NSB has been a lovely school for our son who has been there since nursery. It has a warm and welcoming atmosphere and the staff quickly get to know the boys when they arrive. The teachers are very kind and supportive of the boys and in turn the boys are kind to each other and charitable to others less fortunate.

We feel this is also due to the smaller class sizes. The teachers encourage learning and make the lessons so interesting that the boys are eager to learn. The boys are encouraged to reach their own potential and are taught to be independent from the start. They perform wonderful plays and the music teaching is outstanding. Our son often arrives home singing his heart out to a tune he has learnt that day.

The co curriculum programme is excellent and our son has taken classes in rugby, football, fencing, cookery, piano and French. The after school care is also very good and flexible for working parents.

Our son loves going to school and skips in every morning. He is happy and safe every day at a school that nurtures him, values him and has helped make him the happy and confident boy that he is.” - Year 2 parents

“By encouraging ‘the whole boy,’ boys at NSB become well rounded young men of the future. Opportunities to extend classwork in co-curricular clubs really add to the experience of school and provide extra opportunities to become involved in new areas of interest. Staff at NSB know each individual boy very well and can support and nurture their development, tailoring learning and experiences to maximise individual progress.” – Mrs Woosnam, Head of infants
