The Junior School - Key Stage 1 Curriculum

Homework Reading Recognition of Good Work
Assembly Lunchtimes Break

Our schemes of work are carefully planned to cover The Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 of the National Curriculum as a minimum requirement and continuous progression is ensured by regular monitoring and record keeping within this planning. There is the facility to fully challenge the able children whilst those requiring more support will be given time with a teacher trained in special needs. Mrs Reeves is our Support for Learning teacher in the Infant Department.

Detailed information of the work planned for each year, the material and teaching techniques will be explained and demonstrated at the information meeting at the beginning of each academic year.

HOMEWORK – KS1

Our children have a long school day during which they have been extremely active in both work and play. It is important that when they get home there is an opportunity to relax and enjoy family activities. Children will then be fresher to tackle a new school day. Homework is therefore kept to a minimum.

We value all the support that parents give their children at home but please stop homework if either you or your child becomes distressed. To continue will defeat the object which is to encourage the child in his studies and to give an opportunity for skills to be practised and demonstrated.

READING – KS1

Children will not bring their reading books home every night. They will, however, be encouraged to bring a book of their choice home every night.

Reading books will be sent home on Wednesdays and on Fridays for the weekend.

Using this method, we hope to broaden children’s approach to reading and encourage “readers” rather than children who can read.

RECOGNITION OF GOOD WORK – KS1

Good work stickers are given for achievement on a daily basis. Our Special celebration of Efforts Assembly is held on a Friday afternoon when certificates are given for good work, good behaviour and good manners.

In all such recognition, staff are looking for personal bests thus encouraging every child to strive for recognition, not only the most academically able.

ASSEMBLY – KS1

Except for Tuesdays, each day begins with morning assembly during which children are taught the stories and teachings of the Christian faith through which they develop an awareness of the wide world and the need for co-operation and understanding. Stories from other faiths are also used and children are encouraged to talk about celebrations from other faiths.

On Tuesdays, Year 2 have their assembly with Years 3, 4 & 5 on the West Avenue site. The rest of the infants have an assembly just before playtime.

Parents are invited attend their son’s class assembly.

LUNCH TIMES – KS1

Lunches are cooked on the North Avenue and West Avenue sites. Each day we offer a choice of hot meal or a baked potato and salad selection. Menus are displayed on the parents’ notice boards. The daily choice of desserts includes cooked puddings, ice-cream, yoghurts and fruit. Children are encouraged to try new foods but are not forced to eat anything they dislike. Good manners are encouraged at all times.

Please inform us of any dietary requirements.

BREAK – KS1

Children are encouraged to bring a piece of fruit to school each day. This is added to the class ‘fruit bowl’ and the children are given a selection of child friendly pieces of fruit with their milk before morning break.

Every child needs a colouring book and colouring pencils in case of wet playtimes.
