Newcastle School for Boys Parent Handbook 2008 / 2009

Admissions Policy

1 Introduction

1.1 Our governing body applies the regulations on admissions fairly and equally to all those who wish to attend this school.

2 Aims

2.1 We seek to be an inclusive school, welcoming boys from all backgrounds and abilities.
2.2 All applications will be treated on merit, and in a sensitive manner.
2.3 The only restrictions we place on entry are that of number and suitability. If the number of boys applying for entry exceeds the places available, we cannot offer a place but the boy will be placed on the waiting list for entry. It is our wish for parents to find a place for their boy at the school of their choice. However, this is not always possible, due to excess demand on the places available or a boy’s unsuitability for the education and support that we are in a position to offer.
2.4 Although a boy’s level of and special needs are not paramount to the admissions policy, we would need to be confident that we are in a position to support those needs and that the boy will benefit from our unique education. A boy seeking entry into Years 1 - 6 will need to spend a short period of time with us to allow both parties to assess suitability. Boys from Years 7-13 will need to satisfy us of their ability to cope with the academic standards of our school.

3 How parents can apply for their boy to be admitted to our school

3.1 Our school is an independent boys’ school
3.2 The school’s admissions policy informs parents how to apply for a place at the school.
3.3 Boys enter school at the start of the academic year in which they become five. There is one admission date per year [except for boys entering from another school], early in September. There is the opportunity for boys to start school earlier by attending our nursery, which operates for boys from three years old. Parents should contact the office for relevant information regarding entry between the ages of three and five.

4 Admission appeals

4.1 If we do not offer a boy a place at this school, this will be because to do so would prejudice the education of other boys by allowing the number of boys in the school to increase beyond the maximum number of 20 per class or that the boy will not be able to benefit from our educational philosophy.
4.2 If parents wish to appeal against a decision to refuse entry, they can do so by applying to the governors. An independent panel considers all such appeals, and its decision is binding for all parties concerned. If the appeals panel decides that we should admit a boy to whom we had refused a place, then we will accept this decision and continue to do all we can to provide the best education for all the boys at our school. In the event of the decision not being accepted by parents and independent arbiter will be appointed whose decision will be binding on both parties.

5 Total School Number

5.1 We have no maximum school number but no year group will consist of more than 60 boys.

6 Sizes of classes for infants

6.1 We teach infant boys (aged four to seven) in classes that have a maximum number of 20 boys.

7 Monitoring and review

7.1 This policy will be monitored by the governing body and reviewed every two years, or earlier in the light of any changed circumstances, either in our school or in the local area. The policy will always take due note of guidance provided by the DCFS and ISC.
