Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s award practice expedition

On the final weekend before the Easter break, ten boys from Year 11 took part in their silver Duke of Edinburgh’s award practice expedition.  As well as two nights camping at Akenshawburn in the heart of Kielder forest, the boys spent Saturday paddling on Kielder improving their canoeing and navigation skills.

On the Sunday, they embarked on their first river paddle on the North Tyne. During the day they encountered a lot of wildlife including deer crossing the river and an otter playing around the canoes. They also encountered their first rapids, which they all managed to negotiate without mishap. They are now looking forward to their final expedition in June on the River Tweed.

Thank you to Martin and Kirstie from Simonside Outdoor Activity Centre for their invaluable support over the weekend.
