By Bayley C, Year 12

On 14th March a group the Year 12 Mathematicians, along with Year 11 students considering A Level Mathematics for next year, went to a very inspiring maths lecture at the Northern Stage in Newcastle.

The lecture was organised by Inspire Maths and we heard from three speakers from very different backgrounds. One of the speakers was a maths lecturer at Oxford University while another had graduated from the same university and busked on the streets to make a living! The lectures covered different topics that would be covered at A level and was an introduction to interesting problems, tricks and puzzles for all. The lectures covered the ideas of estimating, statistics and probability, engineering, physics and mechanics, with each speaker giving their own different way of working and viewing problems.

For me, one of the most inspiring points made in the lecture was that we are all mathematicians in our everyday lives and it is how we apply those skills and that knowledge to our work and studies that makes us successful.

The segments also included two musical interludes which were used to demonstrate the importance of wave mechanics and their application. There was a Q&A session at the end where the audience got to ask any questions about the lecture or maths in general. Some of the more memorable were, “What is your favourite mathematical equation and why?” and “What is the most important skill for a mathematician?”
