Learning in Early Years

A Flying Start to Learning

At The Newcastle School, we believe a child's first experience of education should inspire confidence, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning. Our Nursery and Reception classes provide a nurturing environment where children feel safe, valued and excited to explore the world around them.

Following the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, our experienced Early Years teachers create engaging learning experiences that combine purposeful play with carefully planned teaching. Every activity is designed to help children develop academically, socially and emotionally while building the foundations for future success.

Individual Learning for Every Child

No two children learn in exactly the same way. That's why our small class sizes and personalised approach ensure every child receives the attention, encouragement and challenge they need to flourish.

Our teachers take time to understand each child's interests, strengths and developmental needs, tailoring learning opportunities that help them make excellent progress. Regular observation allow us to celebrate achievements and provide the right level of support at every stage.

Children are known, understood and supported as individuals from their very first day with us.

Learning Through Play

Young children learn best when they are engaged, active and having fun. Our curriculum balances structured teaching with child-led exploration, allowing children to develop key skills through meaningful experiences.

Through carefully planned activities, children are encouraged to:

  • Ask questions and investigate new ideas
  • Develop language and communication skills
  • Build early literacy and numeracy confidence
  • Explore creativity through art, music and imaginative play
  • Develop physical coordination and independence
  • Learn to collaborate, share and build friendships
  • Grow resilience, confidence and problem-solving skills

By making learning enjoyable and purposeful, we help children develop confidence in themselves as learners.

The Seven Areas of Learning

Our Early Years curriculum is carefully planned around the seven areas of learning and development within the EYFS framework.

Prime Areas

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Specific Areas

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

These areas are woven together through exciting themes, practical experiences and real-world learning opportunities that capture children's imagination and encourage discovery.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

As part of a through-school community, Early Years pupils enjoy opportunities that are unique within many Nursery and Reception settings.

Children benefit from:

  • Specialist PE teaching
  • Specialist music provision
  • Whole-school assemblies
  • Integration into our House system
  • Visits and shared activities with older pupils
  • Access to wider school events and celebrations

These experiences help children develop confidence, friendships and a strong sense of belonging from an early age.

A Strong Foundation for Future Success

Our Early Years programme is designed to ensure children are fully prepared for the transition into Key Stage 1. By the time they move into Year 1, pupils have developed the academic foundations, social skills and confidence needed to embrace new challenges.

Because we are a through-school, every child is already known by staff and supported throughout their educational journey, creating a seamless transition and continuity of care.

At The Newcastle School, we don't simply prepare children for their next year of education,  we help them develop the skills, character and enthusiasm for learning that will stay with them for life.

My children love the school and are very happy there. The school is nurturing and encouraging.
